IKEA HACK: ART EASEL

An art easel completely makes a playroom. A great addition for kidlits to paint and draw; in my opinion it gives the room an ambiance of creativity. I love the unfinished wood easel from IKEA, especially for $15. You just can't beat that!

We did a little extra work to make the easel super functional. The chalkboard side is pretty cheap. We wanted it to be magnetic in order to add a magnet to hold the paper down, so we painted over the chalkboard with magnetic paint and then painted on top of that layer with chalkboard paint. Not only will it do double duty, but it's also better quality.
I want our playroom to feel cozy, so I used the same stain I’m using on the play table, Rustoleum's Dark Walnut. I am seriously in love with this color. Once everything was stained I lined the shelf with scrapbook paper until my vinyl comes. You can ModPodge on top of scrapbook paper or you can line it with a fun peel away vinyl from Spoonflower or Target. The perk of using vinyl is once it gets dirty and gross it can just be peeled out and replaced.
Another project complete! Next thing on the list.....finishing the play table & painting the walls!
XOXO

  1. Hi! Did you sand the easel before staining it?

    1. I did not sand it before hand. The wood was pretty smooth and it took the stain well, although I do have a few spots that show a few streaks. You could do a light sand just by brushing the wood surfaces over with a high grit sandpaper. Let me know how yours turns out!

  2. Hi Racheal,

Which magnetic paint and chalkboard paint did you use? The home depot one has very poor reviews. Does it work great?

    Thanks,
    Rachna

    1. Oh goodness I don’t remember the exact brand we used, but we bought it at Home Depot I believe. It worked okay, but the paint needs to be reapplied eventually.
